“What are we going to eat?” she asked. “Spam and Dinty Moore?”

“You’re in for a special treat,” I countered. “We’re taking the dinghy to Topps Supermarket. They’ve got the world’s best Key Lime pie, and we’ll stock up on whatever you want.”

Actually, it would be a special treat for me. I hadn’t really stocked up on food in a long time.

As we approached the landing behind Topps, we saw a vagrant sleeping in the grass. We had to step over him to make our way up the hill. He never stirred.

“I didn’t realize there was such a seedy side to Fort Myers Beach,” Andi said.

“Yea, it’s one of the perks of living on the fringe of society,” I answered. “I’m used to it. I deal with the bums in the park in Punta Gorda all the time. Just stay aware and don’t act nervous. They’re people too.”

Encountering this particular bum made me eager to leave this town. There are no homeless people hanging out on the beach at Cayo Costa. We filled a cart with real food, even fruits and vegetables. I warned her that fresh produce doesn’t stay fresh for long on a boat, but she was undeterred. She was going to eat healthy. I could eat out of a can if I wanted to. We stepped over the still-sleeping vagrant as we passed our bags across and loaded the dinghy.
